Materials

Main Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup uncooked rice (white or jasmine) Use any type of rice you have on hand.
  • 2 cups water Filtered water is best.
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons aloe vera gel Pure gel is preferable.
  • 1 teaspoon lightweight oil Options include jojoba, grapeseed, argan, or almond.
  • 3 to 5 drops essential oil For scent (rosemary or lavender, optional).

Instructions

Preparation

  • Rinse the rice in a bowl 2 to 3 times until the water appears less cloudy.
  • Soak the rinsed rice in 2 cups of water for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to achieve milky water.
  • Optional: For fermented rice water, strain the rice and let the liquid sit in a jar at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours, then refrigerate.
  • Blend the rice water, aloe vera gel, and the teaspoon of lightweight oil for about 20 seconds until smooth.
  • Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean bottle or jar.

Application

  • After shampooing, squeeze excess water from your hair so that it is damp but not dripping.
  • Apply the rice conditioner from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding drenching the roots if you have an oily scalp.
  • Let it sit for 2 to 5 minutes while you complete your shower routine.
  • Detangle your hair with fingers or a wide-tooth comb, then rinse with cool or lukewarm water.

Notes

Store leftover conditioner in the fridge for 3 to 5 days. For longer storage, freeze leftovers in an ice cube tray and use as needed. Always patch test new ingredients.
