Materials

For the Body Butter

  • 2 tablespoons shea butter Refined is less nutty smelling; unrefined feels extra cozy.
  • 2 tablespoons mango butter This is the game changer for a lighter feel.
  • 1 tablespoon jojoba oil Feels close to skin's natural oils.
  • 1 tablespoon grapeseed oil Light and quick to sink in.
  • 1 teaspoon arrowroot powder Helps reduce the oily finish.
  • 10 to 15 drops essential oil Optional; consider lavender or sweet orange. Light usage recommended.
  • a few drops Vitamin E Optional; helps slow down rancid smells over time.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Melt gently. Add the shea butter and mango butter to a heat safe bowl. Set it over a small pot with a little simmering water. Keep it gentle, not a rolling boil. Stir until just melted.
  • Cool it down. Take the bowl off the heat and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then stir in jojoba oil and grapeseed oil.
  • Chill to thicken. Put the bowl in the fridge for about 20 to 30 minutes until soft like pudding, not hard like a candle.
  • Whip. Use a hand mixer to whip for 2 to 4 minutes until it looks fluffy and a little lighter in color.
  • Add the arrowroot powder and whip again for another minute. Avoid clumping by sprinkling, not dumping.
  • Scent and finish. Add essential oil and Vitamin E if using, then whip for 10 seconds just to mix.
  • Jar it up. Spoon into a clean jar with a lid. Let it sit at room temperature for a few hours to set.

Notes

Apply on slightly damp skin using a pea size amount for arms and a nickel size for lower legs to avoid greasiness. Store in a cool place and use within 3 to 6 months for freshness.
