Materials

Base Ingredients

  • 1 cup rendered tallow (clean, deodorized if possible) This is the main moisturizing base.
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons jojoba oil or sweet almond oil Adds slip and softness to the body butter.
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder or cornstarch Optional, helps reduce greasy feel.
  • 10 to 20 drops essential oil (optional, like lavender or vanilla oleoresin) Ensure skin-safe and properly diluted.
  • 1 squeeze Vitamin E Optional, helps with freshness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Soften the tallow by warming it in a heat-safe bowl over a double boiler until it is softened and partially melted.
  • Stir in the jojoba or almond oil until the mixture is smooth.
  • Cool the mixture in the fridge for 10 to 15 minutes until it looks opaque and thick like soft frosting.
  • Whip the cooled mixture with a hand mixer for 3 to 5 minutes until it lightens in color and increases in volume.
  • Sprinkle in arrowroot powder and whip again until fully blended, then add essential oil and Vitamin E if using, and whip for another 30 seconds.
  • Spoon the whipped body butter into clean jars and tap gently on the counter to remove air pockets.

Notes

For best results, allow the mixture to cool to the right stage before whipping. Store in a cool, dark place to maintain freshness. Label jars with the date for reference.
