Materials

Main Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt Use full-fat plain yogurt with live cultures if possible.

Optional Add-ins

  • 1 teaspoon honey For itchy scalp, helps with moisture.
  • 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel For oily roots but dry ends.
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil For dry, rough hair that needs softness.
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice For buildup from styling products; use occasional only.

Instructions

Application

  • Start with slightly damp hair, misted or towel-damp.
  • Part hair into sections to reach the scalp easily.
  • Scoop yogurt and massage it into the scalp first.
  • Smooth the remaining yogurt through the lengths of hair.
  • Let it sit for 15 to 25 minutes (10 to 15 if your scalp is sensitive).
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and then shampoo gently, preferably twice.
  • Rinse longer than you think necessary to ensure all yogurt is removed.

Notes

Do not use flavored yogurt; stick to plain. Hot water can irritate the scalp, so avoid it. A leave-in conditioner may be used afterward for dry ends.
